£1bn transformation planned for HSBC’s landmark Canary Wharf tower
Canary Wharf Group and Qatar Investment Authority have submitted plans for a £1bn redevelopment of HSBC’s 45-storey headquarters at 8 Canada Square ahead of the bank’s expected departure in 2027. The proposals would retain and retrofit the 1.1m sq ft building, converting much of it into a 181-room hotel while retaining some office space and introducing restaurants, leisure facilities and landscaped terraces. Plans also include a publicly accessible rooftop venue known as the “Cloud”, offering panoramic London views, and a new pedestrian route through the building connecting the Elizabeth line station with Canada Square Park. Subject to planning approval, renovation work is expected to begin around 2028.
