London new-build sales hit record low

New ISA aims to help older first-time buyers

Back to news

The Treasury is planning to introduce a new first-time buyer ISA to replace the Lifetime ISA. The proposed account would offer a government bonus when savers buy their first home, without penalties for other withdrawals or an upper age limit. The annual savings allowance, bonus and property price cap have yet to be decided and could be announced at the Budget on 28 October. The existing LISA has been criticised for its age restrictions, £450,000 property cap and withdrawal penalties. The new scheme could also be presented as support for the housing market amid falling prices and rising mortgage rates.
