London loft conversions may require heat-resistant upgrades
Hundreds of thousands of London loft conversions may require upgrades as rising temperatures increase the risk of overheating, according to a report commissioned by Mayor Sadiq Khan. Suggested measures include shutters, external shading, ceiling fans, improved ventilation, solar-control window films and, where necessary, air conditioning. Around 1m homes in the capital are already vulnerable to excessive heat, with 92% of residents in existing housing exposed to some level of risk. Without sufficient adaptation, overheating could contribute to 10,000 excess heat-related deaths annually across the UK by 2050, while climate-related damage could cost London up to £36bn a year.
