London new-build sales hit record low

Construction sector downturn deepens

Back to news

The UK's construction sector continues to decline, with the S&P Global UK construction PMI dropping to 44.3 in August, down from 44.7 in July. This marks the 20th consecutive month below the 50.0 threshold, indicating ongoing contraction. Tim Moore, economics director at S&P Global Market Intelligence, noted a significant reduction in output, particularly in housebuilding. Thomas Pugh, chief economist at RSM UK, said: "We see little immediate relief for the sector as weaker real income growth and a sharp repricing in mortgage rates both weigh on demand."
