Tower Hamlets approves Wood Wharf scheme

25th July 2014

Canary Wharf Group is to build more than 3,000 homes at Wood Wharf, on the eastern edge of Canary Wharf, after winning approval from Tower Hamlets Council.

Canary Wharf Group, majority-owned by Songbird Estates, has permission to construct 30 buildings, comprising 2.6m sq ft of residential space, including 3,100 homes that are a mix of private, intermediate and social housing, nine acres of interconnected public spaces and a kilometre of dock-edge walkways. The architectural highlight of the development is a cylindrical residential tower designed by Herzog & de Meuron, the visionaries behind the extension to the Tate Modern art gallery and the Beijing “Bird’s Nest” Olympic stadium. The homes will be served by 100 new high street shops, restaurants and cafes, a hotel, a 420-place primary school, a medical centre and a community centre. The first phase of the project is scheduled to be complete by 2018, to coincide with the arrival of Crossrail.
